North Hollywood Outdoor Summer Safety

Perhaps the best part of summer in North Hollywood is how many fun things there are to do outdoors. But before you head to the backyard, beach, or campground this summer, it’s important to know a few effective safety tips. By taking a few simple precautions, you can help ensure that your summer stays fun and relaxing for both you and your loved ones.

A safe backyard is one that is designed for summertime fun. Before you hold that barbeque or party, however, there are a few things that you should do to get your backyard ready. For example, check the lawn and surrounding areas carefully for holes, exposed tree roots, and other potential hazards. Some situations can mess up the fun like a twisted ankle or skinned knee. Fill any holes you find, and cover or remove roots to avoid accidents.

If you would like to grill outside, there are a few things you should do before you light those burners. If you need to use a gas grill, check for broken or cracked hoses or leaks. Be sure to set up your grill well away from the house, patio furniture, or branches. Never walk away from a grill while it’s on, and be sure to let it cool down completely before attempting to remove ashes.

If you want to enjoy your summer vacation on the beach, it is also critical to follow some simple safety tips. For instance, pay attention to weather reports and warning flags. Even if it seems clear, there could be potential hazards from lightning strikes or rough waves that may seem to come without warning. What is more, never swim alone, and do not allow children or pets to play in the water unsupervised. It only takes a moment for someone to fall, slip under the water, and even lose consciousness or drown.

If your definition of summer fun is camping, there are important things to know before you get going. Like swimming, you should never hike or camp alone. If you don’t know first aid or it has been a while, take a refresher course, and re-stock your first aid kit. Make sure you drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen, hat, and insect repellant. Be wary when using bug spray; however, some pesticides can cause skin irritation or otherwise harm your health. And lastly, stay on marked trails or carry both a map and a compass with you at all times and follow all rules and regulations for proper fire safety.

By utilizing these simple safety tips, you can better focus on having fun and appreciating your favorite summer activity. After all, a little preparation goes a long way!
